But this isnt your typical reference call, and to be honest, youre not sure how to answer- because youve been totally blindsided. For starters, you didnt know you that you were being listed as a reference. Heck, you didnt even know your connection welches looking to change jobs, or volunteer- or whatever it is the person on the otherbei side of the phone is calling to inquire about.Of course, someone shouldnt just assume youll serve as a reference. What if she misjudged the relationship, and you would have turned her down? Not to mention shes missing her chance to really prepare you. But it happens Its happened to me, its happened to managers I know, and someday it may happen to you. And while you may be thinking, I have no idea what youre talking about, youll probably want to say sohonigweinhing more diplo matic to the person on the line. Heres how to handle this situation based on your relationship with the applicant.If You Want to Give a Stellar RecommendationStrategy Answer BroadlyWhen I was a fellowship program manager, I had a fellow Ill call Jane. Jane was awesome She was brilliant, she did everything I asked of her (even volunteer assignments), she worked at a super-demanding organization that loved her- she even had perfect posture.Well, one day I get a call from a mentoring program that matches professionals with inner-city youth. Jane had listed me as a reference, and the company had several specific questions that went beyond What do you think of Jane? I was asked if she was right for the mystery role, as well as to discuss her experience working with minority youth. If Jane had prepped me, I would have had relevant answers- but I had no idea that shed even applied. I couldnt admit that It would have made her look at best presumptuous and at worst irresponsible (which isnt really mentoring material).So, I gave a reference that was truthful- and broad. For example, to answer whether I thought she could do the job, I responded that she was a competitive runner and had more drive than just about anyone Id ever met (true- and applicable whether she was applying to be a systems analyst or connect with an elementary school student). When asked about her experience with diversity, I discussed her interactions with our mainboard members and explained that our board of directors had age and gender diversity (again, broad and a bit tangential, but true).If you find yourself in this situation, give honest, widely applicable answers that paint the candidate in a positive light. For example, great communication skills and dependability are always positives. But recounting the story of someone locking himself in his office to complete his work- while you think it shows persistence and hard work- probably wouldnt come off as well if hes applying for a client-facing role.If Youre Not Comfortable Serving as a ReferenceStrategy Answer Specifically (Then Punt)Its one thing when a former employee neglects to mention that he put you down as a reference, because he had asked you four times over the past four months, and he didnt want to overwhelm you with (yet another) email regarding an application he submitted. Its a completely different story when someone misjudges your relationship and has never asked you to serve as a reference- because if he had, you would have declined. You dont want to sink someones candidacy, but your credibility is at stake. Hopping off the phone (because youre late for a meeting), without saying anything and never calling back is like pulling an emergency lever You can do this if you have nothing nice to say, but it should be the last resort.Instead, landsee if you cant first say one nice thing before you get off the phone- and make it super specific. Heres how it works Say someone listed you because you have name recognit ion, but youve only have a few interactions at industry events. The hiring manager calls and asks you to if you think hed be a good marketing manager. Try this Each time Ive spoken with Mark, Ive been impressed with his ability to shift between small talk and discussing market trends. Then, say you have to run.The brevity of your review implies that youre not a close connection, but you managed to say something nice- and true- so everybody wins (as much as they could in this given situation). If you really dont know (or think highly of) the person in question, be as brief as possible Unfortunately, I dont feel I know Marks work well enough to provide a reference. Sorry I cant be more helpful Thats much preferable to, Weve only met twice, or worst of all, Who?No matter what, as soon as you get off the phone with the hiring manager, you need to contact the applicant. First, hell be glad to know his references are being checked But beyond that, you need to fill him on what the call was like from your perspective.For the candidate youre close with, try something like, I want to give you the highest recommendation possible. I did the best I could, but in the future, please let me know when youd like to list me as a reference so that Im better prepared.And for the candidate you barely know? Be candid. I was surprised to be contacted as a reference, as I dont remember us ever discussing it. Unfortunately, I dont feel I know you well enough to give as strong a reference as you deserve. So, Id appreciate it if youd refrain from listing me in future.Its an honor to listed as reference It means the candidate trusts you to speak to a prospective employer. A yearning for domestication only furthered his alienation.By the time the self- described “non-entity” stumbled into his purpose, he had already been severely wounded. I for one am bored of the vapid narrative that he’s espoused to. While it’s true that Van Gogh’ s death came well before his universal monetary appreciation, I think most experts would agree that the “Christ of the coal mines” wasn’t really vitalized by that sort of thing.I don’t doubt that the degree of financial interest that has since been garnered by his work would bring a tear or two to his eyes, but not for the reason you might think. To the man that once forfeited his last few coins so that a stray dog might have a bit to eat that night, the true numerical value of acclaim isn’t measured via currency but emotional impact.His misguided-ecclesiastical pursuit to provide comfort for the sick and despaired, carried over in his actions and art. Inspiring every medium, from Don McClean’s somber ballad to Dorota Kobiela’s and Hugh Welchman’s innovative motion picture. I don’t mean to belittle his influence by relegating it simply to his paintings and sketches. His personal life illuminates how fiercely candles roar when they’re besieged by shadows.Take his time with Sein for instance, his lover from The Hague or to phrase it less mildly: the middle-aged, prostitute that would go on to infect him with gonorrhea and possibly syphilis. However you depict her, their brief courtship proved to be one of Vincent’s happier ventures.“I believe without question, or have the certain knowledge, that she loves me. I believe without question, or have the certain knowledge, that I love her.”  â€" Van GoghWe owe our knowledge of the extent Van Gogh provided for the sick woman and her young daughter to the numerous letters he sent to his brother, the bulk of which are scribed by a mind drunk off infatuation.Their love gave way to Sorrow, (one of his most popular pencil sketches) in addition to one of the most persistent regrets of his life. Capitulating to disapproval from his family and continued cognitive malady, Vincent ultimately abandoned the woman and her child though he never stopped keeping company with “unsavory characters.”  The c entral motif of his work might be best defined as loser-dom.The proletariat, the quotidian; the mundane beauty of plain, unmistakable darkness. But what exactly does it take to get hired at a top company? That’s the question we asked a handful of leaders at this year’s Best Places to Work. Read on for their insider tips on how you can stand apart from the crowd in order to find the job of your dreams. It used to be that interviews consisted of nothing more than a resume review, phone screen and in-person Q&A. But today, more and more companies are pushing the envelope in order to identify candidates who would truly thrive at their organization. For example, at Heap , the interview process is often a job simulation. “We make our interviews resemble the actual day-to-day as much as possible. We have engineering candidates spend the day designing and building end-to-end features. We have sales rep candidates iterate on mock customer calls with us. We even have potential managers interview their future team to find patterns and produce a plan to improve execution,” shared Matin Movassate, CEO of Heap. At Bain , on the other hand, certain positions require case interviews, “which are, at their essence, discussions about a business problem,” explained Manny Maceda, Worldwide Managing Partner . And at Intuit , a core component of interviews is presentations. As part of their “Assessing for Awesome” (A4A) program, “candidates are given the opportunity to do a task or strategize in a similar way they would on the job, and then present to a small team that assesses for their ability to think creatively and strategically,” said Rick Jensen, Senior Vice President, People & Places at Intuit. Regardless of where you interview, make sure to get the details on how interviews work there. One great way to do that? Glassdoor’s interview reviews , which contain insights from real candidates on what the interview process is, how challenging it is, what questions are asked and more. A large part of your interview process will be dedicated to evaluating your hard skills to ensure that you are able to perform daily tasks, but these aren’t the only criteria on which you’ll be judged. Ask many recruiters, and they’ll tell you that soft skills are just as - if not more -  important. “Instead of calling them soft skills, I would actually call them essential skills,” shared Greg Muccio, Director of People at Southwest . “ Some of the most crucial of these skills include: communication, teamwork, leadership, relationship-building, balance, reliability and dependability.” “Since we judge Kronites not only on what they do but how they do it, we place equal emphasis on behavioral and technical competencies. Relationship building, collaboration and communication are some of the key behavioral competencies, and we ask various questions to understand the candidate’s value system.” In nearly every interview, you’ll hear some variation of “ Tell me about yourself .” You may be tempted to simply paraphase your resume in response, but that’s one of the biggest mistakes you can make. After all, if an interviewer wants to dig into your resume, they can just look at your resume. What employers really want to hear is a more holistic narrative about who you are, both at work and outside of it. “From intern to executive, everyone at Shopify has had ‘the Life Story’ interview,” said David King, Director of Employee Experience, Diversity and Belonging at Shopify . “It’s a process we designed in our early days to help us get to know the real person, rather than their interview persona. Essentially, it’s a two-sided conversation about what you’re interested in, how you’ve shown up in different areas of your life and which accomplishments you value the most.” Bernard J. Tyson, CEO of Kaiser Permanente , asks this question as well: “I ask [candidates] to share their story, their career journey and what they are passionate about accomplishing,” Tyson said. The three elements he uses to evaluate a candidate’s response are “the head, the heart and the guts.” “I want to get a sense of the head - and how they think, work and take in information and synthesize it -   before moving forward. I want to understand their heart - and how they relate to and inspire others - their empathy and passion. And I want to understand how they tap their gut - what drives their ethical compass, what motivates them and how they make decisions,” Tyson explained. In an interview, there’s often a temptation to tell a recruiter what they want to hear. But if this is how you shape your responses, you’re not only doing a disservice to the interviewer - you’re also doing a disservice to yourself. Being honest about your background, skills and interests helps ensure that you find the job that’s right for you, while stretching the truth means you could end up in a job that you’re ill-equipped and/or not a good fit for. “It is not a cliché when we ask candidates to be themselves in an interview. We genuinely desire that. Southwest is not a place where you have to separate your true self from your work environment self. We want you to bring your passions to our company to ensure this is the right fit,” Muccio said. “We are known for our values that make up what we call ‘Living the Southwest Way.’ Those are a Warrior Spirit, a Servant’s Heart and a Fun-LUVing Attitude. We challenge our recruiting team to only hire candidates who embody all three of these core values. It is the criteria on which we measure our employees, so the majority of our questions revolve around these three things.” Ruta Singh, VP of Global Engineering & Product Recruiting at Facebook , said her company takes a similar approach. “We want people who want to be here because their goals and interests align with Facebook’s mission. We want you to come in at the beginning of the day energized and ready to do your best work, and to leave at the end of the day feeling like you accomplished something meaningful,” Sing shared. “So when you’re getting ready to interview, understand that we really want to get to know you. Come ready to talk about what you know, but also who you are.” One of my favorite things to ask when I’m interviewing candidates is what suggestions they have for our program. After rearranging things and replacing certain words, I added a line that wasn't in the original copy (I am especially skilled at...), which further sets this cover letter apart.
